Our 5th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2018 Engagement Session in Nairobi on Thursday, 13 September, was a great success. The panelists provided fascinating insights into Kenya's trade history with the rest of the continent and highlighted the obstacles associated with intra-African trade, which included trade tariffs, harmonisation of standards on products, lack of relevant trade information as well as logistical and infrastructural challenges.
What emerged from the discussion, is that the IATF 2018 provides a platform to start addressing these issues, as participants in the event will have an opportunity to engage with these challenges and find solutions. One of the central themes of the discussion was the lack of trade information. Mr Amr Kamel, Executive Vice President - Business, Development and Corporate at African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) highlighted that the IATF 2018 will be establishing a virtual trade information portal, which attendees and people outside of the event can access after the fair has concluded. This is a major strategic intervention to address the information gap on the continent when it comes to intra-African trade.
